We’ve all heard the saying “happiness is a journey, not a destination” yet it doesn’t change the fact it is the one thing we humans continue to doggedly pursue. “I’ll be happy when I….” is at the preface of every well intentioned sentence. But what being a devotee of Oprah and her wisdom has taught me is that the very minute you arrive at that intended destination where you expect to feel an abundance of bliss and blessings, you might just well experience disappointment and dread instead. It’s because there is so much more to unlocking true happiness than reaching that goal. Sure, it can feel euphoric for a while, but happiness has an expiration date.
It truly is one of the toughest questions you can ask yourself in life, asking yourself what it is you want. And while the common answer will no doubt remain to be “I just want to be happy”, know this: Happiness is only temporary. Give your energy to the journey, and know you are worthy of joy.
