Everyone has at least one – a teacher from their past who they credit with changing both their outlook on education and life as a whole (Dead Poets Society, anyone?). And just like the Japanese proverb – “better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher”– these exceptional educators in whom we were entrusted to learn from often don’t get the recognition they deserve. In my schooling life I was blessed to experience three such inspirational teachers who left an indelible impression on me, something which has lasted long after the final school bell tolled – and what I hope my own children will also one day encounter.
